Vietnam’s durian exports have recorded a new milestone, emerging as the leading agricultural export product and setting a historic record. According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, durian export value in the first eleven months of 2025 is estimated at USD 3.4 billion, surpassing last year’s level and marking the highest figure ever achieved.
China remains the primary growth engine, accounting for approximately 94.35% of total export value, equivalent to more than USD 3.14 billion. Although export volumes in October fell sharply by over 41% due to end-of-season factors and tighter cross-border import controls by China, cumulative export value since the beginning of the year still increased by nearly 14% year-on-year.
Experts note that this sustained growth reflects strong and stable demand from the Chinese market, as well as the increasing ability of Vietnamese producers to meet stricter technical and quality standards. Despite facing higher regulatory barriers, Vietnamese durian has maintained strong competitiveness.

According to Dang Phuc Nguyen, Secretary General of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, price remains a key competitive advantage. The average export price of Vietnamese durian stands at around USD 3,696 per tonne, approximately 15% lower than Thai durian. Combined with shorter transportation time and better freshness due to geographical proximity, Vietnam has become the second-largest supplier of durian to China.
Beyond pricing, Vietnamese enterprises have made substantial investments in standardised growing areas, cold storage facilities, modern packing lines and brand development. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has established a dedicated regulatory framework for durian, including plantation codes, packing facility registration and quarantine procedures.
Exports to other markets have also shown positive signals, with shipments to Hong Kong rising nearly 89% to over USD 45 million, while exports to Japan, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and Canada recorded double-digit growth. With current momentum, Vietnam’s durian exports are expected to approach USD 4 billion in 2025, further strengthening the fruit’s position as the fastest-growing agricultural export.
