Vietnam’s durian exports recorded explosive growth at the beginning of 2026, with multiple key markets sharply increasing imports, pushing domestic prices of the “king of fruits” to elevated levels. According to customs data, Vietnam exported $117 million worth of durian in January 2026, up 275% year-on-year. China remained the largest market, accounting for $109 million, representing a dramatic 505% increase compared to the same period last year.

Last year, durian shipments to China faced disruptions due to issues related to auramine O and cadmium residues. The strong rebound early this year signals improved compliance and smoother trade flows. The United States recorded even faster growth, with exports reaching $3.6 million, up 529% year-on-year. The surge indicates that Vietnamese durian is gradually penetrating high-standard markets.

Vietnam Durian Exports to China, U.S., South Korea Surge Up to 500%

Hong Kong ranked third with $1.8 million, up 340%, while South Korea’s imports rose nearly 500%, totaling $387,000. Taiwan posted the most dramatic increase, expanding 24-fold compared to the same period in 2025. Exporters said the strong growth beyond China reflects expanding market access and improved product quality. Diversification of export destinations is helping reduce reliance on a single market.

Vietnam currently benefits from off-season supply, giving it a temporary competitive advantage. As a result, domestic prices remain high. Grade-A Ri6 durian is priced around 105,000-110,000 VND per kilogram, while Thai varieties range from 165,000-170,000 VND per kilogram. The off-season advantage is expected to last until late April, when competing suppliers enter harvest season. The durian export boom has also boosted Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable export sector. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, fruit and vegetable exports reached $1.1 billion by the end of February, up 60% year-on-year.
