September 2025 marked a historic milestone when Vietnam fruit and vegetable exports reached nearly USD 1.3 billion, the highest figure ever. This achievement is largely driven by the strong rebound of durian exports, reaffirming Vietnam’s position in global agricultural trade.

Record-breaking exports in September 2025

According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, Vietnam fruit and vegetable exports reached USD 1.293 billion in September 2025, up 35.9% from August (USD 951.1 million) and 41% compared to September 2024 (USD 917.25 million). This record illustrates the resilience and potential of the fruit and vegetable sector amid global challenges.

9 months 2025: Growth fueled by durian

For the first 9 months of 2025, Vietnam fruit and vegetable exports totaled USD 6.112 billion, up 8.3% from the same period in 2024 (USD 5.641 billion). Durian played a leading role:

  • After a sharp decline in the first five months, durian exports rebounded strongly from June to September.

  • In 9 months alone, durian exports reached USD 2.5–2.6 billion, making it the top contributor.

Experts agree that the strong recovery of durian exports has been the main driver of the sector’s impressive growth.

Imports and trade surplus

Alongside exports, Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable imports also increased. In September 2025, imports were estimated at USD 234.3 million, up 2.6% from August. In total:

  • 9-month imports reached USD 1.911 billion, up 15.1% year-on-year.

  • Trade surplus in September hit USD 1.059 billion.

  • Overall 9-month trade surplus reached USD 4.201 billion – a strong sign of competitiveness.

Major export markets

Currently, Vietnamese fruits and vegetables have reached more than 10 major international markets. Among them, China remains the key market, accounting for 57.94% of total export value. Other important destinations include the United States (7.54%), South Korea (4.40%), Japan (3.39%), Taiwan – China (2.46%), the Netherlands (2.29%), Australia (1.84%), Thailand (1.65%), the UAE (1.58%), and Malaysia (1.31%). While China continues to play the role of the “locomotive” in consuming Vietnamese agricultural products, the growing presence in demanding markets such as the U.S., South Korea, and Japan highlights the great potential for market expansion and diversification.

Challenges and opportunities

Challenges:

  • Stricter import standards from China, US, EU.

  • High logistics and preservation costs.

  • Seasonal supply of key fruits like durian.

Opportunities:

  • Rising global demand for tropical fruits.

  • Trade agreements (FTAs) bringing tariff advantages.

  • Shifting to organic and sustainable production adds value.

Conclusion

September 2025 set a new record when Vietnam fruit and vegetable exports hit nearly USD 1.3 billion. With durian leading the way, the sector shows strong growth momentum.

If Vietnam continues to improve quality, meet international standards, and diversify markets, Vietnam fruit and vegetable exports will achieve even greater breakthroughs in late 2025 and beyond.
